Every year, the Memorial of Jesus’ death approaches quietly, yet it carries enormous meaning for Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Many of us want to slow down and reflect on what the ransom really means. It’s not just an event we attend once a year. It’s a moment to remember the love Jehovah and Jesus showed and to think about how we want to respond.
Still, if life is busy, it’s easy to arrive at the Memorial evening without really preparing our heart.
I’ve noticed something in my own routine. When I take a little time beforehand to reflect, read, and pray, the Memorial feels completely different. Instead of just attending a meeting, I feel deeply grateful for what Jehovah and Jesus have done for us.
So how can we prepare our heart in a simple, meaningful way?
Here are a few action steps that can help.
1. Slow Down and Reflect on the Ransom
Sometimes we know the truth about the ransom so well that we stop pausing to truly think about it.
Try this simple exercise.
Open the account of Jesus’ final day in the Gospels. Read slowly. Picture the scenes. Ask yourself:
- What did Jesus experience emotionally?
- What does this teach me about Jehovah’s love?
- Why was this sacrifice necessary for me personally?
Even 5 minutes of thoughtful reading can shift your heart into a more grateful mindset.
2. Pray Specifically About Your Gratitude
Before the Memorial season, try making your prayers a bit more focused.
Instead of a general prayer, speak to Jehovah about the ransom directly.
For example:
- Thank him for giving his Son.
- Thank Jesus for his loyalty and love.
- Mention specific ways the ransom gives you hope.
Many people find that when they express gratitude in detail, their appreciation deepens naturally.
This study tool helps you build a habit of gratitude.
3. Read the Gospel Accounts Leading to the Memorial
One practical way to prepare your heart is to spend a few days reading about Jesus’ life and ministry.
You could read sections from:
- Matthew 26–28
- Mark 14–16
- Luke 22–24
- John 13–21
Instead of rushing through the chapters, focus on a few verses each day. Notice Jesus’ humility, patience, and love for people.
A simple question to write in your journal could be:
“What quality of Jesus do I want to imitate more this week?”
4. Write Your Reflections
Writing helps slow our thinking. It allows the message to sink deeper.
You might try journaling about:
- What the ransom means to you personally
- A scripture that touches your heart
- One way you want to imitate Jesus more closely
Some people like using structured prompts or study worksheets. Others simply write a few thoughts in a notebook after reading.
There’s no perfect method. The goal is reflection.
5. Look for Ways to Share the Invitation
Another meaningful way to prepare your heart is by sharing the hope the ransom provides.
Think of someone you could invite to the Memorial.
It could be:
- a neighbour
- a coworker
- a family member
- someone you write to in the ministry
When we talk about the Memorial with others, it reminds us why this event matters so much.

6. Examine Your Heart
The Memorial is also a good moment for honest self-reflection.
Ask yourself questions like:
- Am I taking Jehovah’s forgiveness for granted?
- Where do I want to grow spiritually?
- How can I show deeper appreciation for the ransom in my daily life?
These are not meant to create guilt. They simply help us realign our heart with what truly matters.
A Simple Example
One sister once shared that she prepares for the Memorial by choosing one quality of Jesus each year. One year it was humility. Another year it was compassion.
For several weeks before the Memorial, she reads scriptures about that quality and writes short reflections in her journal.
By the time the Memorial arrives, she feels much closer to Jesus’ example.
Small habits like this can make the season far more meaningful.
A Thought to Reflect On
Preparing our heart doesn’t require complicated study plans. Often it simply means slowing down long enough to appreciate what Jehovah and Jesus have done for us.
A few minutes of prayer, reading, and reflection can change the entire way we experience the Memorial.
So here’s a question to think about:
What small step could you start this week to deepen your appreciation for the ransom before the Memorial arrives?
