Every October, Halloween appears at work, school, in shops, and throughout neighbourhoods. When you choose not to celebrate it, one question often comes up:

“Why don’t you celebrate Halloween?”

As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, I want to be able to explain my beliefs clearly and simply. But when someone asks unexpectedly, it can be difficult to put everything into a short answer.

That is why I created printable Halloween index cards. They are a simple, pocket-sized resource explaining why Jehovah’s Witnesses do not celebrate Halloween and the Bible principles behind that decision.

Why Jehovah’s Witnesses Don’t Celebrate Halloween

Our decision not to celebrate Halloween is not simply about avoiding costumes, pumpkins, or a date on the calendar. We want our choices to be guided by Bible principles.

Halloween has historical connections with beliefs and customs involving spirits and the dead. The Bible warns against spiritistic practices.

There should not be found in you anyone who… employs divination, anyone practicing magic, anyone who looks for omens, a sorcerer, anyone binding others with a spell, anyone who consults a spirit medium or a fortune-teller, or anyone who inquires of the dead.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12

We also want to follow the example Jesus left for Christians. As 1 Peter 2:21 says, Christ left us “a model for you to follow his steps closely.”

Instead of asking only, “Is this harmless?” we can ask:

“Does this fit with what the Bible teaches and the worship I want to give Jehovah?”

Our decision becomes more than something we do not celebrate. It reflects our desire to live according to Bible principles.

A Simple Way to Explain Your Beliefs

Knowing why you do not celebrate Halloween does not always mean it is easy to explain. A co-worker might ask during lunch. Your child may need to explain it at school. A friend may simply be curious. You might only have a minute to answer.

These printable index cards explaining why I don’t celebrate Halloween give you a short explanation along with supporting scriptures. You do not need to memorize a long response. Keep a card nearby and use it when a conversation comes up naturally.

Ways to Use the Halloween Index Cards

Because they are pocket-sized, you can keep them in your purse, wallet, Bible bag, ministry bag, or desk drawer.

You could also use them to:

  • share your beliefs with a co-worker or classmate
  • help children prepare to explain their beliefs at school
  • give to a Bible student learning about Christian celebrations
  • use during family worship to practise explaining your beliefs
  • review the scriptures before Halloween conversations come up

For family worship, choose one card, read the scripture together, and ask:

“How would you explain this in your own words?”

This helps children learn to express what they believe rather than simply memorize an answer.

More Than Saying “I Don’t Celebrate Halloween”

These cards are not meant only to help us say what we do not celebrate. They can help us explain why. Our choices reflect what we value and our desire to let Bible principles guide our lives.

Ephesians 5:11 says:

Stop sharing in the unfruitful works that belong to the darkness; rather, expose them.

When we understand the Bible principles behind our choices, we can explain them simply and respectfully.
