Have you ever noticed yourself repeating the same expressions in your prayers? You have so much on your mind, yet struggle to put those thoughts into words.

Sometimes, taking a few minutes with your notebook can help you understand what you’re feeling before expressing it to Jehovah.

Psalm 62:8 encourages us to “Pour out your hearts before him.” Taking time to reflect can help us recognise what’s in our hearts.

Prayer journaling can help you explore your thoughts, recognise overlooked concerns, and find words for feelings that are difficult to express.

You Don’t Need a Journal to Get Started

Set aside 15 minutes with a cup of coffee or tea, reflect on one or two questions, and talk to Jehovah about what comes to mind.

Writing your thoughts down can help you understand them more clearly.

You might begin with, “I feel overwhelmed.” After writing for a few minutes, you realise, “I’m worried about disappointing people because I’ve agreed to more than I can manage.”

Now you have something specific to discuss with Jehovah.

Writing also helps you recognise recurring concerns, remember reasons for gratitude, and reflect on what you’re learning during personal study. You don’t need to fill pages. A few sentences can be enough.

10 Prayer Journaling Prompts to Reflect On

Choose a question that fits your circumstances and take a few minutes to explore your answer.

1. Honest conversations.
What have I been thinking about lately that I haven’t yet talked to Jehovah about?

2. Jehovah’s personality.
Which quality of Jehovah have I come to appreciate more recently, and what helped me see it?

3. Gratitude.
What small thing happened this week that I don’t want to take for granted?

4. Praying for others.
Who in my congregation might need encouragement right now, and what could I specifically ask Jehovah to help them with?

5. Personal struggles.
What situation is testing my patience, and what help do I need from Jehovah to handle it better?

6. Bible reading.
What did I learn about Jehovah in my recent Bible reading that I would like to mention in prayer?

7. Spiritual growth.
What Christian quality would I like to strengthen, and why is it particularly important for me right now?

8. Recognising Jehovah’s help.
Looking back over the past month, when did I feel especially supported or encouraged?

9. Relationships.
Is there someone I struggle to understand, and what could I ask Jehovah to help me see differently?

10. Deepening friendship.
If I could improve one thing about my conversations with Jehovah, what would it be?

How to Turn a Journaling Prompt Into a Prayer

Suppose you choose question 4 about praying for someone in your congregation. Think of a sister caring for an elderly parent. Consider the challenges she might be facing and write down what you could pray about. You might ask Jehovah to give her strength, patience, and encouragement. Your reflection could also help you identify a practical way to support her.

This approach helps you turn a question into a specific prayer and encourages you to act on your concern for others.

A Little Challenge for Today

Choose one question and spend five minutes reflecting on it before your next prayer.

Write down your thoughts or simply consider your answer. Use what comes to mind to make your prayer more personal.
